How we learn at Pinecones Day Nursery

Babies

  • Our homely baby room cares for up to 9 children per day and offers two fully equipped rooms that babies can free flow between, providing calm, communication-friendly spaces to snuggle, share stories, and build secure relationships with both peers and caring adults.
  • With an excellent staff ratio of 3:1, the environment remains safe, calm, and nurturing, allowing children to progress at their own pace while our passionate and experienced practitioners provide rich learning opportunities and consistently high-quality care.
  • We work closely with parents to mirror home routines within the setting, creating consistency that helps babies settle confidently, while our team builds strong, supportive relationships with families and is always on hand to guide and support you throughout your child’s time with us.
  • Fresh, home-made meals are lovingly prepared by our cook Penny and adapted to suit each stage of weaning, with a focus on baby-led weaning, which research shows supports independence and can benefit speech and language development later in life.
  • Babies enjoy a wide range of open-ended natural resources, sensory play, and a peaceful sleep area with cosy cots and calming music, ensuring rich sensory experiences during play and soothing, familiar routines at rest that reflect how your child is comforted at home.

Early Years

  • Our Early Years Room offers a nurturing, homely environment for children aged 2–4, with free flow access indoors and outdoors, mixed-age learning where younger children learn from older role models, and capacity for up to 28 children, allowing practitioners plenty of one-to-one time.
  • With strong staffing ratios of 1:4 for two-year-olds and 1:8 for three- and four-year-olds, our experienced team works closely with children and families, valuing each child’s home life and tailoring support to challenge, encourage, and extend learning at every stage.
  • We promote independence and confidence by encouraging children to self-select activities, serve their own meals, care for their environment, and take part in adventurous, carefully risk-assessed play that helps them understand safety, manage risks, and build resilience.
  • Learning opportunities are thoughtfully planned through engaging provocations, creative and sensory experiences, and play-based exploration indoors and outdoors, helping children develop curiosity, imagination, and a strong understanding of the world while creating joyful, lasting memories.
  • Our approach to school readiness focuses on building confidence, self-esteem, independence, social skills, and critical thinking through play, leadership in learning, healthy eating routines, and inspiring literacy and maths activities based on children’s interests, ensuring they become happy, confident learners.

Garden

  • Children in our Early Years rooms enjoy free flow access to the outdoors throughout the day, with babies spending much of their mornings and afternoons in their own dedicated garden, and all continuous provision such as water play, sand, role play, and mark making offered both inside and out across all seven areas of learning.
  • The outdoor environment supports children in becoming confident and independent as they manage appropriate risks, climb trees, solve problems through obstacle and assault course play, and explore creative experiences in our well-equipped mud kitchen.
  • We encourage vital life skills and environmental awareness by teaching children to care for living things and their surroundings, through activities such as planting flowers and herbs, observing wildlife, and keeping our environment clean, viewing the garden as a true extension of the indoor learning space.
  • Children also access nearby college fields and the local community, including parks and the library, giving them freedom to explore larger open spaces and the wider world, with enhanced supervision and a 1:2 ratio during all off-site visits.
  • Regular outdoor play and fresh air are central to our approach, supporting better sleep, appetite, and behaviour, with children enjoying outdoor meals in warmer months and even sleeping outside when conditions allow.
